Dog Days: Out and About with Your K9 Bestie
Seattle is a pooch’s paradise – with walking trails, pup perfect restaurants, even fido- friendly outings. Check out these great things to do with your four-legged friend…
Seattle has no shortage of restaurants that are fantastic for bringing your favorite tail-wagger. In the summer there are a plethora of outdoor spaces that are great for fido – like The Pink Door in Pike Place Market where you’ll get a view of the bay, and any of the Portage Bay restaurants. You can find an extensive list of all of the dog-friendly restaurants and patios in the area at www.bringfido.com.
Walk the Dog
With a variety of fun walks that are not only pet friendly, but pet-centric… you can get out there and show off your pup. Some of our favorites? “Run Like a Viking” the Nordic-themed 5K where your pups can dress up like Vikings! This fun event is put on by the Nordic Heritage Museum and takes place during Viking Days August 22nd and 23rd. Another great event (for a fantastic cause) is Seattle Humane Society’s Walk for the Animals – Sunday, October 18th – a 2.8 mile dog walk held around Greenlake with dog contests, and more.
Got a mini Hulk-themed hound? A terrifying terrier zombie? A poodle-skirt clad poodle? You absolutely cannot miss Howl-o-ween Pet Costume Parade at the Redmond Saturday Market. A short 20-minute drive from Seattle, the event will be held this year at noon on October 31st.
Get Out of Town
Need a day trip? Leavenworth, the Bavarian-themed getaway just hours from Seattle is amazingly dog-friendly. The majority of shops and restaurants in this charming little town allow pets inside, and many offer treats and water bowls for the super hot days. Plus, there are great hikes all over the area…
Speaking of Great Hikes…
If you need a resource for all things fido-related, check out one of our favorite doggy sites “You Did What With Your Wiener?” (yes, that’s really the name – and yes you need to be very careful googling this one)! This quirky blog is written by a Seattle resident who explores the area with her two wiener dogs. The site highlights great hikes to do with pooches (including lesser known spots), product reviews and even dog-friendly travelling tips.
An Entire Week Devoted to Animals
This year marks the 2nd annual Washington Week for the Animals – August 22nd through the 30th. This governor-proclaimed special week will offer a variety of fun-filled, animal-related activities and events at animal shelters and rescue organizations around the state. There will be adoption days, animal art, military K9 and working dog demonstrations, pet food drives, low cost spaying/neutering, and lot so family fun! For more information and to see the complete calendar visit http://www.waanimals.org .
More of a cat person?
Well you’re in luck… Coming late this summer and early fall are the first of Seattle’s cat cafes. Meowtropolitan and Seattle Kitty Café are on their way – and they promise to be meow-volous. Playing off of Seattle’s apparent love of coffee AND cats (natural connection, right?) cat cafes are a place to enjoy a cup of joe, and play with cats who are need of a home. Patrons can enjoy admittedly cheesily themed espresso drinks, like the “catpuccino”, spend time with the cats – and even take one home (the cats will all be available for adoption).
